Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this event for?

Anyone curious about art, faith, the inner life, creativity, or what happens when someone gives one question two years to unfold.

You don’t need to know anything about art or Secret Places beforehand. But perusing the Body of Work website will give you a baseline understanding.

Can I come by myself?

Absolutely. This is designed to be something you can experience on your own. You won’t need to arrive knowing anyone.

Would a teenager or young adult enjoy this?

Yes. A curious teen or young adult would be very welcome. You don’t need an adult understanding of art, theology, or anything else to participate.

Should I bring my partner?

If you think they’ll enjoy it, yes. There is nothing particularly “couples” about the evening, so bringing a partner or a friend works equally well.
Please make sure everyone attending is included in your RSVP.

Is this a drop-in event? Can I arrive late?

No. Please arrive at 7:00 pm so we can begin at 7:15 p.m. sharp.
The evening has a sequence, and the presentation and experiential portions build on one another. Arriving late or partway would be an interruption.

Where exactly is it?

Main & Danforth, Toronto, in my condo building.
I’ll send the exact location and arrival instructions to confirmed guests closer to the event.

Is this a fancy art exhibition where we stand around drinking wine and making small talk?

No.
There will be art. There will also be libations. But this isn’t a traditional gallery opening.

You’ll be invited into the ideas behind the work through a presentation, an experience, and a chance to explore the work itself.

What should I wear?

Whatever you’re comfortable in. This is cozy and casual. There will be a photographer, so keep that in mind.

Can I bring my kids? Or my pets?

Sorry. No kids. No pets.

How long is the event?

Minimum 2 hours, maximum 4 hours. It is interactive and exploratory. Sustained attention is appreciated and rewarded.

Why are you hosting this event?

The midpoint event exists because contemplation is invisible.

I am designing an experience that lets people witness formation, one year into a two-year commitment.

It is also an opportunity to test the work with an audience, see how it lands, and hear what people take from it. Your feedback will help inform the work as it develops through the second year.

Do I need to bring anything?

Nope. But bring your reading glasses. The presentation and showcase are text-rich. No need to bring food, wine, gifts, or flowers into the event space.

Is this religious?

No. Secret Places includes my faith because it is part of the life and questions behind the work, but this is not a religious event, a church service, or an attempt to persuade you of anything. Come with whatever you believe, or don’t believe.

Will I have to participate?

Only as much as you’re comfortable with. There is an experiential part of the evening, but nobody will be put on the spot, asked to perform, or expected to share anything personal. Contributing privately and anonymously to the unanswered questions is encouraged.

Do I need to RSVP?

Yes. Space is limited, and this isn’t a drop-in event. Please RSVP so I know you’re coming. Please do so here.

Is this an art sale? Will I be expected to purchase art?

No. Secret Places is a non-commercial endeavour. The goal is not to sell art or make prints. The endgame is to complete a body of work. No products will be on sale at this event. But there will be gifts for you.
